Remedy Entertainment has raised the bar on the FPS (first person, shoot-em up) industry. Sure, I like chasing monsters and creatures from other worlds, but what about monsters in human form.

Remedy, like everyone else in the FPS industry, has introduced its own new graphics engine. The difference� gamers have been given a beefed up graphics engine that rivals those of Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament. The graphics used in the Max Payne are stunning. Before game play, one would think that the background graphics would be a bit cartoonish, no so. All graphics are as life like as you can get with the current technology. There are actual photographed faces mapped to the characters.

I argue that graphics alone do not make a game. There should be something to keep you coming back. The story behind Max Payne has been crafted to keep you glued to your seat. Gamers navigate their way through the game rather quickly as a result of master-crafted story line. The unsolved murder of your wife and kid, New York drug-lords, Russian Mafia, crooked business owners, a satanic madman, an armory of weapons, and some serious sarcasm can only leave you screaming for more. Drama!

The developers could have left out two levels that are referred to as "blood mazes." Real waste of time there. It's almost enough to make you get up from the computer. Who knows, maybe that's the plan. Thankfully those two levels are very short.

With the sour comes the sweet. Most FPS gamers are big action movie fans, go figure. Remedy has given us a way to get out of the heat. BULLET TIME. In a word, Awesome. You too can be like Neo and dodge bullets. Everything slows down to give you a second to get your thoughts together and your shots off.

As a bonus, raising that bar even more, Remedy Entertainment has decided to include the actual level editor that was used in game development. I can't think of anyone else that is proud enough of their product to make such a bold statement.

New graphics engine, refreshing game presentation, realistic characters, and a level editor. A security guard once told me, "Break leather, let the lead fly and land where it may." I can only imagine that was the mentality of Remedy Entertainment as they released this title.

More like Captain A-meh-rica.

Stop me if you’ve played this game before. Superhero goes to an island full of bad guys planning large-scale chaos. Rhythmically flipping between each as he goes, he beats up five or ten henchmen at a time. Along the way, he fights a line-up of his classic rogue's gallery, uses a special vision mode to scan his environment, climbs around the place like a ninja, unlocks various powerups, and picks up all manner of meaningless doodads. Finally, once the day is saved, there's an array of extra challenges he can attempt to earn gold medals.

No, I’m not talking about Batman: Arkham Asylum, but you’d be forgiven for thinking so. Captain America: Super Soldier doesn’t have an original bone in its body.

The basic premise has the player, as Cap, infiltrating a Hydra castle in WWII to halt the plans of a terrorist named Zola. Along the way, you tussle with some other big bads, such as the Red Skull, and uncover a plot revolving around ‘perfecting’ the super soldier serum that made Steve Rogers who he is today.

Cap's character model looks very good, particularly the shield.

The combat system in the game is ripped right out of Arkham Asylum. It is designed around combating multiple foes at once. You’ve got one button for basic attacks, one for stunning opponents, one for dodging, one for reversals, and one for throwing your projectile (in this case, Cap’s shield). However, there are worse games to steal from, and battles do feel intense, with the odds being suitably stacked against you. The issue here is that Cap has a hard time quickly transitioning from punching one goon to another. It typically took me an awkward second or two to stop what I was doing and move over to the next guy, which interrupted any combos I was building up. It’s fun, especially when you work the nine possible upgrades into the equation, but the combat is very flawed.

When you’re not fighting in Super Soldier, you’ll usually be scouring the environment for the next path you need to take. Like with Batman’s Detective Vision, Cap has a special viewing mode that, when activated, points out important objects and things that can be climbed. Actually, Next Level seems to have avoided a common issue Arkham had with Detective Vision; since it never ran out, there was little incentive to ever turn it off, thus making the game seem unsatisfactorily easy. When Captain America turns on Super Soldier mode, relevant objects flash for a second or two, then disappear again. This is fairer, giving us a quick tip while still making us figure the problem out ourselves. I’d like to see this implemented in Arkham’s upcoming sequel.

How Call of Duty Changed Multiplayer

All first-person shooters are the same, right? I mean, every modern FPS out there is little more than a Call of Duty clone. And really, Call of Duty was just a Medal of Honor clone, Medal of Honor was just a GoldenEye clone, GoldenEye was just a Quake clone, and Quake was just a Doom clone. To top it off, Doom was just a Wolfenstein 3D clone.

However, anyone who's been playing first-person shooters since the early days will tell you that this the genre has been constantly evolving since its inception. For proof of this, spend an hour or two playing Black Ops, then go pick up GoldenEye 64. The FPS has grown immensely over the years, and there have been some pretty groundbreaking moments along the way.

One series that has informed the way we view FPS games this generation is the Call of Duty series. Call of Duty actually did sort of begin as a "Medal of Honor clone." In fact, almost the entire team behind Medal of Honor: Allied Assault went on to make the original Call of Duty game. However, Call of Duty did some interesting things with the Medal of Honor formula.

Probably the most important change was the addition of the down-the-barrel view. In the original Call of Duty—and every CoD game since—you could bring your weapon closer to your face to look down the barrel of your gun and aim more accurately. When firing from the hip, the crosshairs that indicated where you were aiming would spread apart, making your shooting less accurate.

Sure, Call of Duty didn't invent the down-the-barrel view or the expanding crosshairs. You can find earlier examples in games like Vietcong and Operation Flashpoint. In fact, these features most likely date back to the modding community of the late 1990s, though it's hard to say for sure. But one thing is certain; Call of Duty popularized the ability to bring your gun closer for iron sites view and the expanding crosshairs. Now, could you imagine playing an FPS without these?

As the years went on, Call of Duty began to stagnate. It was the same game year after year. But then, in 2007, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released, becoming the archetype for an entire new generation of FPS games. While the most obvious change to the series was that Modern Warfare finally left behind the World War II era setting of its predecessors, it made a lot of very important changes to the multiplayer FPS formula.

Black Ops 2

When Call of Duty became a yearly series, Infinity Ward quickly realized they couldn't pump out a quality title every single year. To provide CoD games on Infinity Ward's off years, Treyarch was given the opportunity to fill in the gaps. They were originally brought into the fold for Call of Duty 2: Big Red One for GameCube. They developed the game with help from the staff from Gray Matter Incorporated, who had previously worked on the United Offensive expansion for the original CoD.
Treyarch stepped out onto their own with Call of Duty 3, which released in 2006. However, CoD 3 wasn't necessarily that great of a game, and to this day is probably still the weakest game in the series.
Infinity Ward struck gold the following year with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It completely revamped the Call of Duty multiplayer format and signaled a major shift in multiplayer first-person shooters in general. From that point on, the FPS genre would start to be a lot more like the RPG, with a level-up system and upgradable weapons. They also added Killstreaks, allowing players who could score a set amount of consecutive kills with a powerful bonus, like calling in an airstrike or summoning a chopper. It was clear that Infinity Ward was onto something here.
Treyarch followed this up with World at War, which took a lot of cues from Modern Warfare, but it maintained the World War II backdrop that had been a staple of the series before Modern Warfare was released. They made one very important addition: Nazi Zombies. However, even with the more MW-ish level-ups, upgrades, Killstreaks, and perks, World at War fell short in a lot of ways. It wasn't as balanced as Modern Warfare, and it had a lot of bugs. And that's not to mention the Killstreak that allowed players to call in a pack of dogs, which was ridiculously overpowered. World at War simply could not compare to Modern Warfare.
Infinity Ward decided to keep up the whole MW thing and released Modern Warfare 2, which was also somewhat lackluster when compared with the original Modern Warfare. It also suffered from balance issues and bugs, and though some absolutely loved it, many saw it as a step down from the phenomenal Modern Warfare.
And then Treyarch struck back with a game that could finally be seen as a solid answer to Modern Warfare. Black Ops was Treyarch's crowning contribution to the CoD series. It featured some much needed balance tweaks, like introducing Killstreaks that didn't stack, dogs that weren't completely overpowered, and leaving out the game-changing nukes of MW2. It also introduced a brand new setting to the franchise: the Cold War era. Treyarch even added customizable Playercards, which allowed players to make their own icons that would be displayed to other users. And perhaps best of all, Black Ops brought an improved Zombies mode.

It's perhaps a bit early to be thinking this far ahead, but what will Treyarch come out with next year? So far, they've changed up the formula with every iteration they've developed: Big Red One, CoD 3, World at War, and then Black Ops. Will they be changing it up again and bringing a new CoD sub-series? After the success of Black Ops, I highly doubt it. Just as Infinity Ward found its niche with Modern Warfare, I think Treyarch has finally found its place in the Call of Duty world with Black Ops.
My prediction: Treyarch will again be contributing to the Call of Duty series next year. Instead of digging up some new ideas, I strongly believe they will return to Black Ops. It just makes the most sense. Black Ops finally proved that Treyarch was a good fit for the Call of Duty series, and I think they've found a sub-series with some real staying power.
Just as last year saw the release of Modern Warfare 2, 2012 will most likely see the release of Black Ops 2. This could provide longtime fans with brand new maps in the Cold War/Vietnam setting, even more Playercard options, and a heavier focus on Zombies.
Even though I have to admit that I'm looking forward to Modern Warfare 3, I have high hopes for next year's potential Black Ops 2.

FEAR 3 Review:

F.E.A.R. returns with everything fans of the series would expect. Developer Day 1 Studios takes over from Monolith this time and seems to have learned from their experience creating part of the F.E.A.R. Files add-on. While F.E.A.R. Files didn’t set the series alight, F.E.A.R. 3 is one hell of an exciting and creepy action game.

What the Hell is Going On Here?

Storytelling has always been the weakest link in the F.E.A.R. series. Right from the start, it was clear that Monolith was intent on copying the imagery of Japanese horror movies to create atmosphere and dramatic imagery—often at the expense of coherent story telling. Day 1 Studios must have realized they'd have their hands full trying to tie the first two games together, so they got help from the professionals.

Horror writer Steve Niles co-wrote the story, while legendary film director John Carpenter helped out with the cinematic sequences. The result is a somewhat more cohesive plot. FEAR 3 puts players back into the combat boots of the generically-name Point Man, nine months after the first game. It's hard to say what Point Man was doing all that time, but when the game opens, he is in the custody of Armacham--the vile corporation that created him and his brother, Paxton Fettel. When his telekinetic (and dead) brother rescues him, the two join forces to, well . . . do something.

It's here that the story gets hazy. Point Man gets a distress call from Jun Sun-Kwon, the hot Korean F.E.A.R. operative from his very short-lived stint on the team, and immediately decides to go rescue her—despite never having even actually talked to her, making this a threadbare motive at best. Thankfully, Fettel is around to tell Point Man he's acting like an idiot.

Captain America Review

SAN DIEGO--During the 2010 Video Game Awards in December, Activision showed Prototype 2 for the very first time, attaching a wide open "2012" release window to it. However, now the publisher has narrowed the game's expected premiere date, saying it will arrive in April 2012.

Prototype 2 is seeking vengeance this April.

[UPDATE] During an Activision preview event at Comic-Con 2011 tonight, the publisher pegged Prototype 2's release date to April 24. For more on Prototype 2, check out a live demo of the game fromGameSpot's Tonight on the Spot.

In addition to announcing the new release window for Prototype 2--due out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC--Activision noted that the game will be on display this week at Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego. The publisher will be giving 15-minute presentations of Prototype 2 at Activision's booth throughout the show.

However, gamers who can't attend the show won't be left in the cold. Activision has retooled Prototype 2's official website, adding a new layout and the first part in a three-part CGI trailer series.

As for the game, Prototype 2 is the sequel to 2009's well-received open-world action adventure title from Radical Entertainment. It is set in the fictional world of New York Zero and casts players as Sgt. James Heller, an ex-soldier tasked with taking down the protagonist of the original game, Alex Mercer.

Bringing Kingdoms of Amalur to life

What They Talked About: The panel kicked things off by talking about how it's risky to start a new IP, but when a development team has 10,000 years of lore from best-selling author R.A. Salvatore to work with, it can create a rich world with backstory for everything from characters to creatures and architecture to plant life.

Coman and McFarlane stressed how they wanted to create a world that would engage players who would want to spend the time to learn about the fabricated universe, but have it also be fun for those who just want a fun romp through a fantasy realm. McFarlane talked about how the best editor he ever had always made him go over each comic book after he was done and ask himself why he did certain things. There should always be a reason for everything, he said.

Even though McFarlane comes up with the ideas, the animation team has the freedom to animate the creatures its own way and the team meets again for tweaking and fine-tuning. As an example, the panel showed the audience concept art of the Bolgan, a large red tribal creature with one eye. The inspiration for the creature was drawn from Irish mythology, and there's an entire story to the Bolgan that explains why it only has one eye.

Everything begins with the writing, and from there, the artists and animators can mold and create. Developing the Bolgan begins with a digital sculpt and then turns into an in-game model, which reduces the complexity of the sculpture but retains most of the information. Creating a walk cycle gives the viewer an idea of its personality, and details like the way the Bolgan pivots its foot to adjust its massive weight may be lost on most people, but the team's goal was to make the creature as realistic as possible--beer belly and all.

Murray stressed that they wanted to build a world that is worth saving and make the towns feel like they're integrated with the culture of the people who live there, rather than just build another fantasy city. The environment and the structure should tell just as much of a story as the people who live in it.

Now that 38 Studios has brought the Balor to life, they just need someone to kill it.

Before wrapping up the panel, the team showed some artwork of the Balor, an enormous creature that shoots a beam from its eye and moves around with crablike legs. Every detail, down to the way the Balor's breasts jiggle when it attacks, was deliberate. McFarlane even got up at one point to demonstrate just how much movement you need in your body to make a sword strike look convincing.

Takeaway: Most people will play a game like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and not notice every little thing, but the fact that those details are there will make the universe feel more alive.

There are two things you need to know going into L.A. Noire, and the first is that this isn't just a 1940s-set Grand Theft Auto. Yes, it features a lot of driving and shooting in an open world, but its real focus is on investigation. And while you're probably already aware of its detective-sim aspects, you might be surprised to learn that you’ll actually spend a lot more time scouring crime scenes and questioning suspects than you will chasing them down and/or shooting them dead.

Second, Noire pulls very few punches. The story of Cole Phelps, an ambitious young detective and war hero working his way up the ranks of the LAPD, it delves into the seedy, frequently disturbing underbelly of 1940s Hollywood. As in seemingly every work of LA-set noir fiction, there's a cesspit of violence and corruption lurking just beneath the sunny glamour, and Cole's job is to wade into it daily, coming into frequent contact with creepy rapists, wife-beating drunks, grieving families and at least a few battered, naked and/or burnt corpses. The content isn’t much more graphic than your average TV cop drama (apart from the occasional nudity), but it's heavy subject matter for a game, and Noire plays it surprisingly straight, with very little of the wry humor that characterizes most Rockstar releases.

Assuming those first two paragraphs didn’t scare you off – or, better yet, that they piqued your interest – odds are you’re going to love L.A. Noire. Bringing together aspects from GTA, the Ace Attorney games and the combined works of James Ellroy, Raymond Chandler and every film noir director ever, Noire feels like the first truly complete detective sim we’ve ever played.

It’s also the most compelling. As it unfolds across 21 separate cases, Noire weaves fascinating narratives about gangsters, serial killers, corrupt doctors and a stolen shipment of army-grade morphine – and while they all seem separate, they gradually come together to create a larger, overarching story that isn’t completely apparent until the very end. All of this is carried out with some fantastic acting, which – thanks to the revolutionary facial-capture technology used in Noire – is at once deeply convincing and faintly eerie.

At the center of it all is Cole: strait-laced, educated and seemingly humorless, he’s out to earn citations and make a name for himself – and at first, he comes off as kind of a robotic douche. That changes over time, however, and – thanks in part to the World War II-flashback cutscenes that unfold between cases – you’ll gradually learn that he’s much more complicated than he appears. While you wait for him to grow on you, you’ll get plenty of personality from his five partners, who change with each “desk” Cole works on over the course of the game.

Some are friendly, some are cranky and some are complete bastards, but one of them will follow Cole at all times to provide hints, running commentary, fire support and (if you don’t feel like driving) the ability to fast-travel to any point on the huge map. (They can also get in the way, though, so try not to wander into any cramped dead ends or you might get stuck.)

So how’s it play?

Regardless of which desk you’re on, most cases involve six basic types of gameplay: investigation, interrogation, running, fighting, driving and shooting. During investigation sequences, you’re set loose in a crime scene (or other place of interest), and wander around looking for clues, which can range from seemingly insignificant documents to gruesome wounds on a corpse. It’s often not enough to just find them, either, and you’ll often have to open an object or move it around a bit for its significance to become clear.

To make this less daunting, there’s an assist feature that vibrates the controller and plays a piano tone whenever you’re near a clue. While the assist is fun, it also tends to turn investigations into bouts of wandering aimlessly in search of the next buzz, so those who’d rather use their actual powers of observation can turn the feature off. (Either way, “investigation” music will play until all clues are found, although you can turn that off as well.)

The clues you find are then instrumental in the interrogation phase, during which you’ll use Cole’s notebook (which functions suspiciously like a PDA) to ask questions of witnesses and suspects. This is also where Noire’s impressive face-capture technology comes into play, as you’ll then need to watch their expressions to see if they’re hiding something.

While the facial capture allows for a full range of human expression, you don’t need to worry about the actors being too subtle; if they’re telling the truth, they’ll usually stare unwaveringly into Cole’s eyes, while most liars look shifty and nervous. At that point, the question isn’t whether they’re lying, it’s whether you have a clue that provesthey’re lying – and if you’re not sure, whether picking “doubt” is maybe a better option.

Think of it like the press/accuse system from Phoenix Wright, except that you only get one chance to correctly judge each answer (unless you’re replaying the case, of course). Get too many wrong, and you’ll still end up completing the case successfully – thanks to branching outcomes, the game always finds a way, whether it’s by introducing a last-minute witness or redirecting you back to some clue you missed – but you’ll likely get yelled at by your captain for incompetence.

It’s a good thing, then, that you can draw on a pool of up to five “intuition” points, awarded for solving smaller cases and/or leveling up Cole’s rank (which also awards new outfits and access to unique vehicles). Spend an intuition point, and you can eliminate a wrong answer during questioning (as well as most of the wrong evidence for backing up a lie accusation), or go online to see how other players have answered the question. It’s also possible to reveal all the clues at a crime scene, if you’re stumped during an investigation.

Portal 2 is the sequel to the fan-favorite Portal game, which was a small and short game included with Valve's Orange Box collection. It is a first-person puzzle platformer with an amazing story and wonderful humor.

The focus of Portal 2 is the portal gun, a device that can create two portals on flat walls, allowing the player to travel between them like a worm hole. Using this device, the player must navigate the world of Portal 2, stopping every now and then to figure out what needs to be done in order to proceed.

Portal 2 starts off very easy and each level works to teach the player the basics of the game. Very quickly, you will be able to pull off amazing combinations of moves that may have seemed impossible to do before. Driving the game is a compelling story that is both interesting and funny. Like a good book, it will be hard to put this game down!

This was a Triumph!

The biggest complaint about Portal 2 is that the game is too short. However, this is said after a 6-8 hour single player story and a 3-4 hour co-op game with its own unique levels and story. If anything else, saying that a 10 hour game is too short really proves that people loved the game and wanted more. You may still get stuck on some parts and, at times, the game may get frustrating, but this will only make it more satisfying when you solve a level.

Don't expect an action movie where you take out your enemies with guns and punches. Portal 2 is a thoughtful game. Sure, you will be frying turret guns with death lasers, but that's just part of a puzzle. Overall, Portal 2 is an extremely polished game with very few flaws. When DiRT 2 was released in 2009 it boasted a lengthy and varied career mode, numerous multiplayer options, and uniformly excellent presentation. Its sequel loses none of those things and also makes some great additions to the formula. Split-screen multiplayer with support for two controllers is now an option, there are more vehicle classes to choose from, gymkhana events and snowy conditions pose fresh challenges, and new multiplayer modes put interesting automotive spins on some first-person shooter favorites. Dirt 3 brings a lot of superb content to the table, and because it offers a plethora of customizable difficulty settings and assists, newcomers and veterans alike can enjoy its excellent off-road action.

Gymkhana events are a great addition to the Dirt formula.

Regardless of which difficulty level you play at and whether or not you take advantage of stability and braking assists, Dirt 3 handles like a dream. There are dozens of great-looking modern and vintage vehicles in the garage, and you race them on all manner of surfaces and in changing weather conditions, but getting behind the wheel of one that you haven't driven before is never a problem. The controls are responsive, and while it's certainly possible to mess up so spectacularly that your ride loses panels and becomes deformed to the point that it's unrecognizable, there are gameplay mechanics in place that ensure you don't feel the need to hold anything back. Even as you hurtle along narrow dirt trails and around icy hairpins, Dirt 3's cars, trucks, and buggies encourage you to push them harder by using excellent audio and rumble feedback to let you know that you're not quite on the edge yet.

Demanding new gymkhana events in which you're challenged to perform tricks in specially designed arenas reinforce how excellent Dirt 3's controls are. In these exciting sessions you score points for crashing through carefully positioned destructible blocks, and for performing donuts, spins, slides, and jumps. String different tricks together to get the crowd pumped, and you build up a score multiplier; display anything other than masterful control by colliding with something, and your multiplier goes down. It's not entirely dissimilar to performing combos in a skateboarding game, except that the tricks are significantly less complex. Stringing successful tricks together against the clock is still plenty challenging, though, and as a result, gymkhanas are great practice for other events. Once you can make a car dance around a cone and slide at speed through a gate or underneath a truck, getting it around a corner in a race doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Changing weather conditions prevent otherwise very similar races from feeling repetitive.

Every event in Dirt 3, whether it be a point-to-point rally through a Kenyan desert, a head-to-head race in the Aspen snow, or a circuit-based rallycross event that weaves in and out of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, demands precise driving. You can get away with a few collisions here and there, particularly if you take advantage of the five flashbacks at your disposal to correct your mistakes, and it's entirely possible that you might find finishing in first place too easy if you're an experienced player. Turn off some of the assists, crank up the difficulty, and switch from cosmetic damage to realistic damage, though, and you'll find that Dirt 3 is exactly as challenging as you want it to be. At the other end of the scale, if you're new to off-road racing and looking for a way into the genre, Dirt 3 has you covered. In addition to the aforementioned assists and other options, it's the first game in the series to offer a dynamic racing line like those seen in both the Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo series on consoles.

That racing line can be invaluable as you learn your way around Dirt 3's 100-plus circuits and stages; position yourself poorly as you take a turn or jump over a crest, and you might make a subsequent corner unnecessarily difficult. Also invaluable in the events where she's available is real-life co-driver Jen Horsey, who always delivers the information you need in a clear, concise, and timely fashion. (A male alternative is also available, as is an option to have either co-driver use more complex and detailed language.) If you listen to her carefully, rally stages that wind through the forests of Finland or around the lakes of Michigan don't seem nearly as daunting. You still won't have much time to admire the impressive scenery or to contemplate the foolhardy fans that occasionally run across the track ahead of you, but you're far less likely to wrap your car around a tree or crash through a barrier and into the crowd.

Replays afford you an opportunity to admire both the scenery and your skills behind the wheel.

Many of the events in Dirt 3's lengthy Dirt Tour career mode span multiple back-to-back races at the same location, but the game does an excellent job of keeping the action from feeling stale. After finishing the first of three rallycross events in dry conditions, for example, you might race the next during a grip-changing downpour and then the final in wet conditions after the rain clouds have passed and your visibility is improved. And in point-to-point rallies, racing the same stages in different directions can make for a very different experience, especially if you're under a desert sun one stage and having to use your headlights to cut through the black of night the next. Also lending variety to your career is that you invariably have several different events to choose from. The dozens of events that compose the Dirt Tour are organized into four seasons that must be completed in order, but your progress through each season is anything but linear, and you always have the option to return to events that you want to replay in an attempt to improve upon your position or best score/time.
